The speedometer and rev counter still worked. The vehicle started and drove normally. That led the owner to assume the LCD itself was the only problem, but a proper cluster repair begins by checking whether the display is the failed part or simply the first visible symptom of a wider fault.
The fault: a fading and intermittent Audi display
The Audi arrived with a centre LCD that was weak when cold, improved slightly after the cabin had warmed up, then faded again. Several lines of information were missing and the backlight had an uneven, yellowed appearance. At night, warning messages could be seen only by looking directly at the display.

The repair process
The instrument cluster was carefully opened to access the internal display section. Dashboard electronics are not well suited to improvised repair attempts. The casing, needles, dial faces, ribbon connections and circuit board all need to be handled correctly. A damaged needle mechanism or incorrectly refitted dial can create an additional fault that was not present before.
The failed LCD assembly was replaced with a suitable high-quality part, and the associated display connections were inspected and renewed where required. The illumination was also checked to ensure the repaired screen would be readable in normal daylight and at night.

Likewise, a display problem accompanied by water ingress, corrosion or multiple electrical faults needs a wider assessment. Water can damage tracks and components beyond the LCD area. In those cases, the repair depends on the condition of the board and whether the damage is limited or extensive.
There are also cases where the screen appears faulty but the real issue is poor vehicle voltage. A weak battery, charging fault or poor connection can cause unusual dashboard behaviour.
